Graduating in a recession

Like many others, I also feared graduating in a recession, but let’s face it – it’s not the end of the world. In fact, this can actually be a good thing for all you new graduates. Here is the reality of it:

  • Unemployment rates haven’t been this high since eleven years ago. Fewer jobs mean more competition.
  • You probably know someone who was laid off, but job cuts means more opportunities for entry-level job seekers that cost less.
  • This all means that the best of the best will be hired.

Scared? Don’t be. Although the Bank of Canada has recently declared the recession over, this doesn’t mean that the job market has sprung back to what it was. Battle the slow job market through strategic planning and vigorous preparation to increase your chances.

Be ready to start somewhere, even if it means starting at the bottom. You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great. Do your research to understand what’s available on job market and the salary ranges for the job title before you walk into that interview. Realize that in order to get your foot in the door; you have to be more than ready! This begins with a top-notch resume to give a good portrayal of who you are, what you did and what you can do.

Next – interview preparation. How do you set yourself apart when everyone is fighting for the same job that you are? Consider your unique experiences and use them to prove that you can in fact do the job.

Finally, stay optimistic! Anything worth having is worth fighting for. Realize that you’re not the only one experiencing difficulties. There are many others just like you in the same position right now. What goes up must come down and vice versa. Even if you don’t land your dream job immediately, when the market does pick up, you’ll be more than ready. When opportunity knocks, make sure you’re there and ready to answer at a moment’s notice. Don’t leave it up to fate. Take charge and start preparing now.
